Swim @ Tessensohn CSC

We brought the kids out for a swim at Tessensohn yesterday. It was an achievement for us since it’s the first time we brought them swimming on our own. We usually went with my SIL and MIL, who can help us out during the bath time. Buy yesterday they weren’t free to join us plus we feel the boy needs a swim. The last time we visited the pool it was about a month ago.

Anyway, this is the 3rd time we went there. The previous two times, I forgot my phone. Hence no photos. This time round, some to share.

Floating Zai

Zai had a fun time making himself “float”. But he is more apprehensive now, and dare not just jump into the adult pool. However, he stills jumps into this kids pool since he can touch the ground. But I was a little scared that he might bump his head.

Frog Slide

That’s Zai at the mouth of the slide looking at Chubby who has helped him up. You bet this is the highlight of the pool for him.

Well, so how did we solve the bathing problem. Our initial plan is to let Zai swim first while Loi and I watch. And it turns out well cause Loi fell asleep on the way there. So when it’s about time, Chubby will bring Zai for his bath while I swim with Loi for a little while more before bathing her. Then I will bring Loi for her bath and pass her back to Chubby when she’s done. And it’s my turn to bathe.

Loi Sleeping by the Pool

But well the plan didn’t turn out as expected. Cause Zai refuse to get out of water. And I have already let Loi go for her swim as I don’t want to reach home late as a result Zai missed his meal time and goes straight for his nap. Plus the water was cold although it was a hot day. I think the reason is the pool is in a sheltered area (one of the reason I prefer this pool is because of the shelter, no worries about the sun damaging their skin). So I didn’t let Loi swim long. She was out of the pool before Zai.

So I put out stuff on the pram while I carried Loi to the toilet. I bathe her first and I was lucky that there is a little sitting area inside each cubicle. So I place her there when I help her put on the diaper. After she is done, I place our bags on the sitting area, place her on the pram and pushed the whole pram into the cubicle while I bathe! I thank god that the cubicles were just large enough for my pram to get in without being splashed wet.

So while I bathe I continue to engage Loi attention so that she won’t get bored and start screaming to get out. Of course I only took a quick shower mainly to wash away the pool water and change. Maybe it’s the first time Loi sees me having a bath, so she actually look at me with interest. Ha.

I guess after this round we will be more confident in bringing the two kids for a swim on our own. 🙂 so how do you all manage at the pool with toddlers?

Swimming on their Own

On May Day, we brought the kids out for a swim at our regular club. The club has two pools, a normal “big” pool that is 1.2m-1.8m-1.2m deep and a kids pool that is really shallow and comes with a slide and some kids water feature.

That day when we reach, there were two boys and an Indian family already in the pool. The two boys were primary school going kids. But I think maybe lower primary or the elder brother maybe a P5 at most. So they were playing in the pool on their own. I didn’t see their parents around. We brought some toys to the pool as my niece isn’t really into swimming. When the boys see the “water gun”, they took it and play without even asking us if they could borrow. And my boy was a little “furious” cause someone is playing with his toy. But we told him to share since he doesn’t really play it and there were other “toys” for him. So he got distracted and left the two boys alone.

After sometime, the boys starts “spraying” water at each other cause they have another of the “water gun”. And sometimes the water got sprayed onto my kids. I’m totally fine with it except that it got into my girl as well. And she is a little too young for that. We tried telling them to be careful. After a while somebody asked for their water gun back. That’s when I know that the gun belongs to someone else. And left with only one gun left, they started spraying around into the air. And again it got into my daughter. Chubby told them gently that they should be careful of the baby.

Other then that, the boys are rather okie. They will play with my boy and nieces. So the swim went by uneventful. And I brought my girl up first since she can’t really swim for that long and went for my bath after I’m done bathing her and left her sleeping in her stroller under the watch of my SIL helper.

When I came back after my shower, the kids have all gone for their shower. My SIL was looking after my two kids as my boy have also finish showering and then she went for her shower. When Chubby came out he told me about the incident. Apparently, the little boy almost drown during the short time I was away for my shower.

According to Chubby, the boys were playing at the baby pool. And after a while, the elder brother probably got tired of it, got out and jumped into the adult pool. The younger brother followed and jumped in without thinking. BUT he is not 1.2m yet. So he struggled in the water. The elder brother tried to help but in the first place he is not a very good swimmer, and probably also doesn’t have enough strength to help his brother. By the time Chubby notice it, he quickly left my boy with my SIL and tried to go help but by then the boys domestic helper has already ran to them and help pull the younger brother out. Later on when Chubby went to the boys to get back our toys, he asked them where is their parents. According to the boys, their father is playing badminton in the hall, and they are left with the helper.

This set me thinking. Is is really safe to place your boys under just the “supervision” of the helper? Maybe the father thought the boys are old enough. But kids being kids can just forget about safety the moment they got too engross in their play. Plus with just the helper is it enough? Does the helper knows how to swim? Does she knows what she needs to do if the boys are in some kind of danger? Besides, does he knows that his younger child has not reach the height for the 1.2m pool?

For myself, I think I wouldn’t leave my kids alone in the pool until they are probably in Secondary school? And most likely upper Sec? But that reminds me again that I can’t swim well, if anything happens what should I do? I think I need to get a whistle so I can blow it and catch other swimmers attention should anything happen.

So whats your take? When should we learn to let go at the pool?

Swimming Again

Its been a month since we bought Zai for a swim. It was the lunar 7 month, so my MIL told us not to bring him for a swim. But Zai have been bugging us to bring him for a swim. Every time he opens the cupboard to take out his books, he will see his float and point it to me. Indicating his “need” to go swimming. I promise him I will bring him for a swim the previous Saturday. But it was too hazy and we decide not to take the risk of bringing him for a swim.

So finally this Saturday we got a chance to bring him for a swim. We started off at the kids pool. Zai have a fun time riding on the “rockers” and literally jumping into the pool without caring if there is anyone there to catch hold of him. He just love the waters. Later Zai move on to the lazy river while I waited upstairs as I need to look after the barang barang. I heard he had much fun there as his new arm float allows him to be really floating properly with Chubby holding on to his arms at the front.

Swimming on 17 Sept

But I think that tire him out a bit. Cause he wasn’t struggling to get back into waters when we carry him out to bathe. He even turn around and bade bye bye to the frog “rocker”. I hope we will be back soon again.

Swimming before the Lunar 7 Month

I think we were quite bless in that Zai have a love for water… He loves bathing since young and is not afraid of water. Which is why, we brought him to a real swimming pool to swim since he was 1 month old. Our initial thoughts was to bring him to those baby spa, but after deliberating the costs, and that at that time, we have a neck float borrowed from someone, there really isn’t a need to go to those expensive baby spa. Besides, Chubby’s work place have 2 swimming pools which is hardly use, and he is also the member of CSC. Which means, we don’t have to squeeze with others at the public pool. So on and off we will try to bring Zai to the swimming pool for a swim.

And we did just that last Saturday. This time, we brought him to CSC Bt Batok to swim. Together with my SILs, nieces and cousin-in-law. They had a great time. Chubby even carried him and took a slide down into the pool. I heard Zai was giggling away when he reached the bottom. Too bad I was actually up at the top and wasn’t down there to see.

It was a good date that day, cause the sun wasn’t really that hot in the morning and it was just one day before the Lunar 7 month. Which means, Zai won’t get to go swimming for a month. So we are glad that he enjoyed himself. 🙂

In the mean time of the month, I think we need to get a float for Zai. As you can see in the photos, he is currently wearing a yellow float that attaches to his body. We thought that is a good design, but apparently its too big for him and he isn’t able to balance properly in the float. Chubby and I were thinking of buying a normal round float or a hand float for him. We have yet to come to a conclusion which is better…
